KENNEBEC VALLEY YOUTH
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Are you looking for a new musical challenge?  Would you like to play in a full symphony orchestra with other excellent & committed student musicians?

Auditions on May 29th & June 5th at the University of Maine at Augusta!

Kennebec Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra offers youth in the Central Maine area an opportunity to play classic orchestral music with their peers, led by the energetic & inspiring Jinwook Park, who performs, directs, and teaches in Boston and at Colby College.  Just as top student athletes play for the school team & also for a travel league, there are young musicians eager to explore orchestral repertoire with other advanced players, while they continue to perform with their local ensembles. KVYSO is an outstanding enrichment opportunity for young musicians!   With its central University of Maine at Augusta location, the rehearsals are convenient and accessible to students from Readfield to Brunswick, Lewiston/Auburn, the Mid-Coast & beyond.

KVYSO leadership is very aware of how busy young Maine musicians can be!  We schedule rehearsals in the evening to accommodate after-school commitments, and have chosen a central location that minimizes travel time. It is very important that KVYSO musicians continue their connections with their school ensembles, as KVYSO is meant to be supplemental.  We also highly recommend that students receive private instruction, and can help connect students with local music teachers.

KVYSO music is chosen from the standard, professional orchestral repertoire. Students will study at least two complete symphonies during the year. String players should be able to play 3 octave scales and arpeggios in all keys, major and minor, or be working towards this goal. Wind and brass players should also be working towards the goal of playing scales and arpeggios in all major and minor keys, in the range of their instrument.

An intermediate orchestra, Kennebec Valley Youth Orchestra, for interested students not yet ready for KVYSO, is also in development.  String students should be comfortable in at least 1st and 3rd positions, and be developing beautiful tone and vibrato. All players should be able to play in major and minor keys up to 3 sharps and flats and be able to read in basic meters and all basic rhythms. Rehearsals will be from 6:30-7:30, with a conductor to be named soon.  KVYO will join KVYSO for select pieces, to be conducted by Jinwook Park.

May 29th & June 5, 6:00-8:30 pm in Room 115 in the Fine Arts Building, University of Maine at Augusta.

All students auditioning for KVYSO must audition with the Prepared Sight Reading excerpt (below).

Scale  All instruments: one scale of your choice from the Maine HS All State required scales.

Solo     Choose a piece from your instrument’s standard repertoire which demonstrates your technical mastery and  beauty of expression.

Prepared sight reading Excerpts from Beethoven Symphony #1, available to download below, or click on the link.

BASSOON, CELLO/BASSCLARINET, FLUTEHORNOBOETIMPANI, TRUMPETVIOLA, AND VIOLIN

These excerpts are from Beethoven Symphony #1, which will be one of the pieces the orchestra will play in the fall. Please listen to it, to get a sense for the music and tempo. All excerpts include the Menuetto and Trio movement,  which is very fast and rhythmically difficult to get together. When you play it, keep subdividing! Some instruments have a little extra in their excerpts. Play everything on your excerpt page that is not crossed out. You do not need to count very long rests.

Additional dates by request.  Contact Betsy Kobayashi at 621-4166 or pinelandsuzuki@gmail.com.

Mr. Park enjoys a versatile career as a music director, performer, and educator. Noted for his animated and nuanced performances, he is the founder and music director of Haffner Sinfonietta, music director of Hwaum Boston Chamber Orchestra, and conductor of the Boston Korean Chorus. As a violinist, Mr. Park engages in chamber music and solo recitals and has performed with several orchestras as a soloist. Also an accomplished violin teacher, he holds a private studio in the Boston area. From the Fall Semester of 2016 he has conducted the Colby Symphony Orchestra.  Maine’s musical community is extremely fortunate that he calls Maine home part of each week!

He received a Master of Music degree in violin performance at the Boston Conservatory as a full scholarship student of David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, during which he was invited by the Jamaican government to perform in Kingston. He further continued his Doctor of Musical Arts studies at Boston University. A passionate advocate of cultural exchange, he has been recognized for his work in bridging Korean and American communities with the Hwaum Boston Chamber Orchestra and Boston Korean Chorus.
